Making an Oil Candle in a Citrus Fruit

I saw this on Facebook yesterday and since I had a bowl full of pink grapefruit, I thought I would try it. Of course the picture on Facebook was just a picture so I did what I always do -- Googled it! There were several how to sites and blogs about it and it was quite easy to do.

It does not smell like grapefruit -- more like something being fried in canola oil! I don't know if this would be more than a clever centerpiece on a table, but since you can eat the inside first before making the candle, it would be one way of recycling the rind or at least re-purposing the fruit.

Happy . . . well. . . whatever.

The 3 R's: Re-Purpose, Re-Use, Re-Cycle Redux

As I have told you before, I like to re-purpose things (or re-use). Here is something that can save you a few cents and brighten up a cross country gift.

When mailing a small gift to a friend, re-use a bright gift bag someone else used to give you a gift.

Cut off the handles and the tag.

You may need to remove a heavy piece of cardboard inside the lip of the bag

and you may need to trim the side of the bag that the bottom is on. This will give you a cleaner looking fold. After inserting the gift, fold the top of the bag to the side to which the bottom of the bag folds.
Using wide packing tape, close the bag shut and tape a mailing label on the side to which the bottom of the bag is folded.

Now that is a bright package! Wouldn't you love to open your mail box and find that bit of sunshine?

Happy standing in the line at the post office!!

The 3 R's: Re-Purpose, Re-Use, Re-Cycle

In this economy, one has to think about saving money. I have been doing a lot of trying to do more with less and utilizing the 3 R's: Re-Use, Re-Purpose, and Re-Cycle. If I don't knit or sew something for myself, most of my clothes shopping is done at re-sale shops and Goodwill. It is now the cold months of the year and I have been thinking about some of the ways I could use second hand sweaters as opposed to just wearing them. I found a great blog post at Kayla K's Thrifty Ways.

Kayla K's article on re-purposing sweaters was written about 2 years ago, but is still very relevant with gas sky high and unemployment still an issue. Enjoy! and Happy Knitting!
